ProSim has the pleasure to support a team in the Students Challenge, 2009 Edition. Team 224 with two young students Fanny Riallant (ENSIACET) and Clément Nicolas (Ecole de l'Air) will drive a 25 years old Renault 4L from Toulouse / France to Essaouira (formerly known as Mogador) / Morocco, a journey of over 1500 km. The start of the raid will be given on next December 27th.
In the style of the great mythical African adventure, this sporting challenge combines navigation by road-book with regularity based motor sport. The winning team will be the one that will have accumulated the less penalty point during the raid. Therefore speed is not that important, but a good management strategy combined with precise navigation is required to win the challenge.
But there is more. Under the United Nations Environmental Programme’s “Plant for the Planet: Billion Tree Campaign”, the participants are provided with a sustainable development project consisting in planting young date palms and ensuring the necessary irrigation by creating a 100 cubic meter water catchment basin and providing a solar pump. During “Green Day” the participants, under the direction of the local project leader, will dig holes and plant the young trees. They will then water them for the first time, giving them a head start for survival.
The local association will then organise regular watering and provide regular reports which will appear on the Student Challenge website over the following months. Personnel will be paid by the project to water the young trees several times a month for the first year, in order to give them the best possible chance for their roots to grow down to reach ground water. At that point the young date palms will be able to live in complete autonomy. In a few years, the fruits of the Students Challenge participants’ work will provide food and comfort to the village of Bani Moussi.
Even more, the Students Challenge joins forces with the Morocco government, Unicef and Aïcha Foundation to fight against micronutrient deficiencies which are a source of many public health problems in Morocco. Every team must bring a "Nutrition Education Kit" comprising soy or sunflower oil, iron-enriched flour, and iodized salt. During the raid, the food will be given to a village at a nutrition education workshop during which teachers will show the population how to eat better with no additional cost.
"The decision to support a team was not long to make" explains Gilles Hameury, Marketing Manager of ProSim. "We find ourselves very much in line with the concept and the humanitarian spirit in which the challenge is organized".
