Uhde chooses ProSimPlus HNO3 for the optimization of their plants Top
Uhde GmbH, a leading plant engineering and construction company, has chosen the ProSimPlus HNO3 software to enhance the process of the nitric acid production plants they design. Through modelling and simulation of the production process the plants can be precisely tailored to customer requirements, thus increasing plant profitability and minimizing investment risk. “ProSimPlus HNO3 is a modern tool that allows us to test new plant configurations quickly, thereby saving time in the design phase”, explained Rainer Maurer, Head of Process Group Nitric Acid, Fertiliser Division.

ProSimPlus HNO3 is specifically dedicated to nitric acid production and nitrous vapour absorption processes, which involve particularly complex physical and chemical phenomena. They include in particular nitrogen monoxide oxidation, nitrogen dioxide dimerization and nitrogen oxides absorption in nitric acid aqueous solutions. ProSimPlus HNO3 provides a specific thermodynamic package that includes a complete database of the pure components involved in these processes, the appropriate thermodynamic models, and the correlations for calculation of reaction, dimerization or equilibrium constants. These unique features, that enable the user to quickly build up an accurate simulation, have led Uhde to put aside most of the general simulation packages available on the market.

Evaluation of the software by Uhde was conducted by testing different operating modes (load variation, summer, winter operations…), in particular on a dual pressure unit process (the Uhde dual-pressure process). The results from ProSimPlus HNO3 were compared to those generated by the in-house software and proved to be consistent. “The reliability of the results and the easiness of convergence were key elements that convinced us of the robustness of ProSimPlus HNO3”, added Mr. Maurer. Last but not least, the ProSim support team also proved its ability to provide quick answers and to respond efficiently to demands throughout the evaluation period. This element allowed Uhde to consider future collaboration with ProSim with confidence and to envisage the complete replacement of their in-house software with ProSimPlus HNO3.

ProSim announces a sales turnover increase of over 35% in 2005 Top
ProSim, the company specialized in process simulation software, announces a total revenue increase of 36,6% for 2005, compared to the prior year period. The main part of this growth is due to the record increase in software licenses sales, services revenue contributing to it also but to a lesser extent. This performance was obtained without decreasing the profitability of the company, since the net income of the company more than doubled over the same period.
Key indicators are very positives” indicates Stéphane Déchelotte, chairman of ProSim. “The Research & Development investments carried out allow a very good positioning of our products on the market. Maturity, competence and motivation of our teams do the rest. We are also getting the first dividends of our efforts to develop our international sales since our export revenues were multiplied by 3,5.

We also note that an increasing number of major players in the oil & gas or chemicals fields give up the solutions proposed by our competitors and switch to ProSim software” adds Stéphane Déchelotte. Already recognized for its leading positions in some specific fields (nitric acid plants simulation, power plant optimization, plate-fin heat exchanger design or batch chemical reactors and distillation columns modeling), ProSim offers today a highly competitive general steady-state process simulator (ProSimPlus) and a very smart thermo-physical properties server (Simulis Thermodynamics). Thanks to this range of software, combined with efficient and reactive engineering services, ProSim is clearly positioned as the alternative to historical process simulation software vendors.

ProSim organizes the first training session dedicated to CAPE-OPEN Top

The first training session fully dedicated to the CAPE-OPEN standards has been organized by ProSim (http://www.prosim.net) for Rhodia. “It is a clear sign that industrials increasingly integrate the CAPE-OPEN standards in their software considerations” says Michel Pons, from the CO-LaN (http://www.co-lan.org), the non-for-profit organisation that manages the CAPE-OPEN standards.

Industrials who wish to make their existing codes comply with the CAPE-OPEN standards, in order to allow them to interact with commercial applications, now have the choice between entrusting a company, such as ProSim, with the development or to train their personnel in order to conduct these developments in-house.
This training session was specifically created for Rhodia and mainly addressed CAPE-OPEN interfaces relative to physico-chemical properties databases and thermodynamic calculation servers. While relying on ProSim’s experience in the domain (ProSim finalized the PPDB tester for CO-LaN and developed the property server Simulis Thermodynamics), this training aimed at providing Rhodia engineers the necessary know-how to integrate CAPE-OPEN in the development of in-house applications. The session covered the fundamental notions of COM middleware, the specifications common to objects and domains covered by the CAPE-OPEN standards, the PPDB specification used to access pure components databases as well as the “Thermo” specification used to access thermodynamic calculations.

The expertise brought by ProSim allows us to consider future developments within the framework of an industry recognised standard” say Patrick Auvray, World Simulation Manager at Rhodia. ProSim is an active member of CO-LaN and contributes to the development of the CAPE-OPEN standards, in particular through its software component Simulis Thermodynamics, dedicated to thermodynamic property calculation and phase equilibrium. This training, customized to respond to specific requirements, completes the set of scheduled sessions proposed every year around ProSim’s major areas of expertise (thermodynamic, steady-state and batch processes, distillation, chemical reaction, energy management…).

Simulis Thermodynamics: providing powerful calculation at a reduced price Top
If the price of the Simulis Thermodynamics license is well below that of similar products available on the market, it is because, from the launch of the Simulis component range, ProSim made the strategic choice of following a new economic model in which profitability is based on reduced prices and large volumes.
Reduced license prices are made possible thanks to efficiency gains generated by technology available and transferred to the customers:
-at the development level, the main element of the software cost, the “component” technology used in Simulis, allows the re-use of existing codes to a large extent and thereby minimises development and validation costs.
-at the distribution level, the other major software cost element, the choice of the online internet sales as the main channel allows substantial commercial cost reduction.

A large volume is expected as studies show that in the same company, many engineers and technicians need to run thermodynamic calculations, not only process simulation and modelling specialists. The requirement is that these calculations be accessible in their usual working environment such as MS Excel. Furthermore, numerous domains of engineering sciences, not only process engineering, also require quality physico chemical properties. It is the case of, for example, thermal engineering but also aerodynamics, physics, hydraulics, mechanical, material, etc…
Thanks to its ability to be integrated in third party packages, Simulis Thermodynamics can be embedded in software designed for wider fields of application such as CFD, equipment design (heat exchangers, compressor, pipe-lines, etc…). In this case, run-time licenses are proposed and the dispatch is ensured by the integrator himself (please consult: info@prosim.net).

The price of the license is neither due to a lower quality of the software, nor to a reduced version of a more complete product. Simulis Thermodynamics includes complete component databases as well as the thermodynamic models that are available in other ProSim software. It was not developed by unqualified engineers, but it is the result of fifteen years of activity in the field and continues to be enriched by thermodynamic experts. The price of license you benefit from is only linked to the business model.
